Technical writers often write user manuals and how-to guides. It takes some skill to be a technical writer as you have to know how to write anything from security systems to foreign exchange tips, but they get a great income. A good place to start is to join the Society for Technical Communication (STC).Anyone that does technical writing should join this organization. This organization lets you communicate and network with other writers. This is a great place for any technical writer to get a job, learn from other writers, and become a better writer themselves.

If you are serious about becoming a technical writer, you should take a technical writing class at a college or university. If there are no colleges in your area that offer this class, there are plenty of online classes you can take.

Make a book with some examples of your writing. A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is similar to a resume that shows off your writing skills. If you do not have any technical writing experience, make sure you list all of your other writing experiences. You may have to do some jobs for free in the beginning, but this will look great on your CV.

Many technical writers have a degree in journalism or English. Getting an education is important if you are serious about becoming a technical writer. A lot of technical writers also start off as a research assistant or something similar. Attending conferences is a great way to get some more training and knowledge. Technical writing is a great work at home job that offers a great income.
