Importance of technical writing skills has increased after the rapid rise of popularity of the internet. An individual skill in technical writing can offer his or her services to people from all over the world. Apart from being a lucrative career, technical writing is important to explore the various scientific and technical advancements that civilization is making.

There is a popular misconception that only a technical expert can be a good technical writer. To simply be a technical expert will not suffice. An expert who cannot convey technical literature in an easy to understand way will obviously turn out as a very bad writer. Does this mean that one must focus on writing skills alone when trying to progress in the field of technical writing?

Simply writing fluff or converting technical concepts into overtly simple content will not work with the target audience. One has to strike the right balance between technical expertise and writing skills. The two are not necessarily complementary to each other. This is a reason a completely different set of skills are required to become a good technical writer.

Another important need is the ability to do good research on the internet. Technical content, unlike content designed for general use, is expected to withstand the rigors of intellectual and critical analysis. Solid research backed with references to reliable sources of information is a must to enhance quality of technical writing. A person who fulfills all these requirements will automatically enjoy high demand for his or her skills.
